I'm not that type of girl.
My name is Emerald Anderson and I'm not going to bullshit you: I flunked out of college after my sophomore year, I've been fired from every job I've ever taken, and I've never had a fully functioning relationship in my life.
I wish I could say that I had a cheerleader in my corner, someone who says, "No, Emerald- -You're great and you are good at something!" but I don't. My grandparents are completely oblivious to my life, and my mother's dying words to me were "You're going to end up just like me one day. A beautiful nothing."
She was right.
As I decide to start my life over and take two jobs that will forever change me--one from the inside, and one from the outside, I keep my mother's words close to my heart so I can keep the sexy and mysterious Carter Black away.
He's the first man who's ever pursued me, the first man who seems bent on finding out why I am the way I am, but he's wasting his time.
I'm not broken. I don't need to be fixed. I'm perfectly fine being a beautiful failure...
Sometimes not knowing what a book is about is for the best.
I saw this book awhile ago and I was intrigued by it. The synopsis had me wondering. There wasn't much said about the book and the cover was different. Unfortunately I had so much going on at that time that I could not get to it. When I saw it had a blog tour and the dates I knew I would be on spring break and could totally read and review it. I was stoked! After reading it I am more stoked. So much more.
I hate giving synopsis' all over again so I am just going to get into it. Emerald is a strong character who doesn't take any bullshit. She says how she feels and makes no apologies. After she loses her mom, Emerald knows that her life is nothing, at least that is how she feels. Like nothing, a beautiful nothing. She flunks out of college. She drinks and gets fired from all the jobs she's had. She doesn't think she is good enough.
What I loved about her though, is that she is a writer and everyday she would write. She had sent in her work to many publishers and was rejected but she never gave up writing. To me that was a sign that she was not weak, she was a fighter but just had not discovered it, she did not see how strong she actually was. It is so easy to quit and do nothing in life. To say, what is the point. Even though yes she does at times feel this way, she still wrote.
I read as she slowly emerges from her shell. From the things she thinks are not essential. From the places she is made to go to. The job she finally ends up at to the people she finally opens up to. Emerald's world slowly starts to unfold.
Carter, oh Carter! Now this guy, he is...wonderful. He is a true gentleman. He is a bit snarky and gives it back to Emerald which I loved. He slowly helps Emerald see her worth. He doesn't just jump right in, he builds their "relationship" slowly. Piece by piece it all slowly comes together. Even though I loved them together, I felt something...I don't know, I don't want to say off because that's not right. Its like he's holding back. I was left wondering what it was but, I would push it aside because I was so consumed.
Then you want to know what? Emerald does something that I couldn't even believe. I wasn't expecting it. Then as if the author knew I could not take it anymore, Carter's something is revealed and I was like WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL? I kept trying to make my kindle swipe to the next page....there was no next page!
This book was different. It wasn't a perfect little package. It is one of those books that shows that life is not always easy, even if your beautiful. Sometimes we have to struggle and be thrown down by life in order to see that we are good enough. For us to emerge from the ashes and see the beauty in life and in ourselves. To believe that we can accomplish those things we want as long as we try and let others help us. I can not believe I have not heard more about this book around on the interwebs! Seriously, this book is that good.
I gave this book
4.5/5 hearts
enjoy peeps!!!
