From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wait for You and Be with Me comes a daring tale that pushes boundaries . . .
At 21, Calla hasn't done a lot of things. She’s never been kissed, never seen the ocean, never gone to an amusement park. But growing up, she witnessed some things no child ever should. She still carries the physical and emotional scars of living with a strung-out mother, Mona—secrets she keeps from everyone, including her close circle of college friends.
But the safe cocoon Calla has carefully built is shattered when she discovers her mom has stolen her college money and run up a huge credit card debt in her name. Now, Calla has to go back to the small town she thought she’d left behind and clean up her mom’s mess again. Of course, when she arrives at her mother’s bar, Mona is nowhere to be found. Instead, six feet of hotness named Jackson James is pouring drinks and keeping the place humming.
Sexy and intense, Jax is in Calla’s business from the moment they meet, giving her a job and helping her search for Mona. And the way he looks at her makes it clear he wants to get horizontal . . . and maybe something more. Before Calla can let him get close, though, she’s got to deal with the pain of the past—and some very bad guys out to mess her up if she doesn't give them her mom.
Holy Mother of Hot Guys!
I am on JLA overload. I have been reading all of these books by her and I can't seem to get enough. I love this series and the way Jennifer writes her books. They seem to capture you right from the beginning.
With so many NA books being set on the college campus, it was a nice change of pace for this books backdrop to be set in the "real world". Calla has to return home after her mom does some terrible things using Calla's name. Draining her college savings and opening up credit cards in her name. While most people could never understand this, I have a friend who's mom actually did almost something similar. I saw how this affected her and I could see some similarities of my friend in Calla. Well except for the whole she goes back home, gets a job in her mom's bar and there is a hot ass ex-marine that works there. I mean lets be honest if this was my friend I think I would have pushed her aside so I could be Jax's girl. What is it with that name Jax? Sexy, smoldering, protective, snuggler, patient, great kisser. This guy is just legit Book Boyfriend husband material.
This story took me for a few loops. Things I was not expecting. The mystery, the thrill, the angst, the sexual tension. I enjoyed the build up between Calla and Jax.
When an author knows how to make the sizzle and desire come out of the pages and hits you in the face, that is when you know you have a winner! This is how it was for me with these two. While I did miss the men from the other 2 books, Jax did not disappoint. Not one bit. I actually have to say that for me her surpasses them. He protects Calla and is always patient. He see's her beauty inside and out.
Calla's mom Mona, I have no words for that lady. I can not believe the situation she puts Calla into. Luckily Jax is in her corner.
This book is longer then the other 2 and yet, I was so invested in the characters and story it did not feel like it was 448 pages. Jennifer has a way with words and storytelling. She combines many layers and elements. Slowly they are exposed leaving me fully sated. I never felt cheated. She gave me what I needed and she gave it to me good. I am never disappointed with any of her books. This is an author that can go from one genre to another flawlessly. She knows how a story needs to be set up, prepared and executed.
