The truth shall set you free.
My name is Calla Price and I’m drowning. My new world is a dark, dark ocean and I’m being pulled under by secrets. Can I trust anyone? I don’t know anymore. The lies are spirals. They twist and turn, binding me with their thorns and serpentine tongues. And just when I think I have it figured out, everything is pulled out from under me. I’m entangled in the darkness. But the truth will set me free. It’s just ahead of me, so close I can touch it. But even though it shines and glimmers, it has glistening fangs and I know it will shred me. Are you scared? I am.

Together, we float to the surface, still intertwined.  We break through the top and I suck in a breath and Dare is staring into my eyes. There’s tension here, but not the bad kind.  It’s the kind that ignites you, the kind that intoxicates you, the kind that once you taste it, you’ll crave for the rest of your life. I’ve forgotten that I was going to be careful, that I was going to reject him on every level. All I can remember, all I can focus on, is how veryalive Dare DuBray is making me feel in this moment, how alive he always makes me feel. For a girl who has been surrounded by death her entire life, this is a very big deal. “I’m a little afraid of you,” I blurt honestly, and Dare still has his arms around me.  Our treading water motions keep our legs rubbing together, the friction still there. Hot, Hot, Hotter. Dare smiles, but there is no humor in it. “Good.” “Why?” My honesty makes me seem innocent, but I don’t know how to play games.  I have no experience with the opposite sex at all. “Because that makes you feel something.” But he’s hesitant now and he looks away. There’s something he wants to say, it’s balanced on the tip of his tongue, but he swallows it. “What is it?” I ask softly.  “Just tell me.” He wants to, I can tell. His secrets are killing him. He just wants to be normal, he’s just acting out a role. I don’t know why I feel like I know this.  It’s just there, suddenly resting on my heart. “You don’t have to be someone you’re not,” I murmur quietly.  His dark eyes snap up to mine and he pulls his hands away. There’s something in his eyes now, something guarded, and our easy afternoon has come to an end. “What makes you think I am?” he snaps. “Pretending to be something I’m not, I mean.” I’ve somehow annoyed him, and I don’t answer because I don’t know what to say. “I’m not being someone I’m not, Calla,” he says coolly as he strides from the water.  “I’m being who you need me to be.” I’m utterly confused, and I’m dripping wet. “We don’t have towels,” is all he says when I follow him. My clothing soaks up the water and it is a very cold ride back home. Dare doesn’t say another word and I leave him in the garage. I don’t see him at dinner, and I don’t see him the rest of the night. But as I lay in bed around midnight, I see his car leave the garage. I don’t see him come home, and I’m awake for half the night waiting. I have no idea where he goes when he slips away. Somehow, I think he wants it that way. There’s a fork in the road and even though I see it, I can’t avoid it. One road goes left, one goes right, and neither of them end well.  I feel it in my bones, In my bones, In my bones. I sing a song of nonsense, and it sings back.  The notes echo and twist in the air, and I swallow them whole. “Come out,” I call behind me, because I know they’re there.   I can’t see them, but they’re always watching.  Eyes appear, blood red, and they blink once, twice, three times. “I can see you,” I announce and there’s a growl and then I’m crushed beneath the dark, beneath the weight, beneath the oppression. “You don’t scare me,” I lie. There’s savagery here, there’s grace.  But above all, there’s oblivion and no matter what I do, I will be sucked into it.  I know it. I feel it. I’m crazy. And it doesn’t matter. I’m the rabbitrabbitrabbit and I’ll never be free.

Mind-twisting, gut wrenching and explosive.
I wasn't sure what book 2 would bring but damn Courtney Cole delivered.
The first book had me on the edge of my seat, this one had me doing stuff like:
Putting my kindle down and walking away.
Pacing the floor trying to get in thoughts in order.
Scared of what the next few chapters would bring.

The words seem to flow off the page, my mind would conjure up vivid pictures of the characters.
It was beautiful and haunting. I didn't know what to do. I had to keep reading because, there was no way I could sleep with out knowing what the hell was going on.

Since book one ended I thought the story was leaning one way. I thought I had figured it out.
I was wrong!
Courtney through me for  loop a HUGE loop that I am still trying to process.
Just when I swore I was getting close to figuring something out, she yanks that away. My mind was reeling and I was left with a sense that she was taunting me.

If you love books that are thrilling, have you on the edge of your seat and overall great plot and writing then this is definitely the book(s) for you.

I know some people say they hate cliffhangers and series books BUT I feel like I need a break between books.
My mind is still going over events in the book, still trying to piece things together. I can't shake the characters. That, for me is when I know I have discovered a great book.

Courtney Cole's Verum, had me going through so many emotions. She knows how to pull on those emotions. She works them. I was on the anxious, happy, nervous, sad, biting my nails, and insatiable. I couldn't stop reading, I didn't want to. I wanted to hug the characters, I wanted to sit with them and ask questions. Of course that's not possible but I wanted to anyway. This book series is amazing and I look forward to book 3!!

Don't miss the first book in the Nocte Trilogy...

EXCERPT
Glancing up, I suck my breath in when I find dark eyes connected to mine, eyes so dark they’re almost black, and the energy in them is enough to freeze me in place. A boy is attached to the dark gaze. A man. He’s probably no more than twenty or twenty-one, but everything about him screams man. There’s no boy in him. That part of him is very clearly gone. I see it in his eyes, in the way he holds himself, in the perceptive way he takes in his surroundings, then stares at me with singular focus, like we’re somehow connected by a tether. He’s got a million contradictions in his eyes….aloofness, warmth, mystery, charm, and something else I can’t define. He’s muscular, tall, and wearing a tattered black sweatshirt that says Irony is lost on you in orange letters. His dark jeans are belted with black leather, and a silver band encircles his middle finger. Dark hair tumbles into his face and a hand with long fingers impatiently brushes it back, all the while his eyes are still connected with mine. His jaw is strong and masculine, with the barest hint of stubble. His gaze is still connected to mine, like a livewire, or a lightning bolt. I can feel the charge of it racing along my skin, like a million tiny fingers, flushing my cheeks. My lungs flutter and I swallow hard. And then, he smiles at me. At me. Because I don’t know him and he doesn’t know better.

  NOCTE Synopsis
SAVE ME AND I'LL SAVE YOU.... My name is Calla Price. I’m eighteen years old, and I’m one half of a whole. My other half-- my twin brother, my Finn-- is crazy. I love him. More than life, more than anything. And even though I’m terrified he’ll suck me down with him, no one can save him but me. I’m doing all I can to stay afloat in a sea of insanity, but I’m drowning more and more each day. So I reach out for a lifeline. Dare DuBray. He’s my savior and my anti-Christ. His arms are where I feel safe, where I’m afraid, where I belong, where I’m lost. He will heal me, break me, love me and hate me. He has the power to destroy me. Maybe that’s ok. Because I can’t seem to save Finn and love Dare without everyone getting hurt. Why? Because of a secret. A secret I’m so busy trying to figure out, that I never see it coming. You won’t either. I can’t trust my emotions and I don’t know what is true. There’s only one thing I know for sure. Nothing is what it seems. Guardian Available now Excerpt:
Sometimes the things that go bump in the night are real.
Happy birthday to me. I close my eyes and burrow into my pillow as I try to sleep, as I try to escape this life. It’s a life I never thought I’d have, a life I most certainly don’t want. I’m still feeling sorry for myself as the blackness of sleep finally overtakes me. I don’t know what time it is when I shoot straight upward like a rocket. Something had yanked me from the oblivion of sleep, something loud and shrill scraping my window. My room is completely dark and I glanceat my clock in confusion. 3:00 a.m. As my heart pounds hard against my ribcage, I quickly scan every corner of the room. In the last few hours, dark shadows had migrated onto my pink walls, but they’re familiar, nothing out of the ordinary, although in the night, they seem twisted and scary. I remain motionless as I allow the sleep-induced fog to clear from my brain. As I sit, I feel common sense and logic slowly returning. Of course nothing had touched my window because my bedroom is on the second floor. Nothing can reach it. And there are no trees near enough to brush against it. It was just a dream. It was only a dream. I chant it silently to myself like a mantra as I consciously slow my breathing down, hoping that my racing pulse will soon follow. It was only a dream. But just as I’m calming down, I hear it again. A high-pitched shrill shriek, reminiscent of fingernails on a chalkboard, scraping down my window. I gasp and pull my feet up to my chest, which is when I notice the temperature. I notice because I can see my breath. Timidly, I blow a puff out again, watching the way my breath turns white in the air. Holy crap. Oh my God. What the hell? The sound stops and stillness surrounds me once again, the silence so loud that it echoes in my ear. Nothing moves around me, the shadows are perfectly still as they twist across my wall. They look like mangled fingers and arms and legs, but they don’t move. My legs are weak and shaking, but I know I have to move. I have to move off my bed because it feels like something is under it. Something terrifying. With a leap, I bound across the room, my feet hitting the floor several feet away from the edge of my bed. The floor is ice cold, as though it had been covered in a blanket of snow. I’m trembling as I race to the far wall and check the thermostat. Because that’s the only explanation. I must’ve bumped it earlier, I must’ve turned the AC way down. But the luminous numbers stare at me in contradiction. 74 degrees. It must be broken. It has to be broken. My breath is coming in pants now, terrified, anxious pants. My fear isn’t logical. I know there’s nothing here. I’m the only one in this room. Or am I? The air seems to push at me from all around, something dark, something heavy, something real. Something unseen. My fingers shake, my legs tremble, and then all of a sudden, they can no longer support my weight. I go down like a pile of bricks, collapsing onto the floor. I lie still because I can’t move, because something seems to sit on my chest, holding me down. The shadows start to move, to slither across the walls, to reach and pull and dance. I struggle to focus, to see what it is. But all I can see are the numbers on the thermostat suddenly moving, rapidly counting down from 74 to 20. Twenty degrees? The air is frigid as I suck it in, as I try to pull the ice crystals into my mouth so I can breathe. All of a sudden, there’s a blackness in front of me. It hovers over me, a shapeless mass, sucking in the cells of the air, the atoms and the molecules. It’s darker than the blackness of my room, blacker than the blackest black. Something is here. With me. “Dad?” I whisper in a white puff. Because what else could it be? I reach out a finger to touch it, and then I can’t see anything else, because the darkness of it surrounds me, bleeding into everything else, even my vision. The shriek is back, screaming into my ears, bleeding into my brain. Then there’s nothing.

I am pleasantly surprised with this book. It totally want what I was expecting. I love the theory behind the book too; everything happens for a reason and everyone has a purpose and a story. I love the idea that everyone that comes into your life has a purpose, and that everyone has a guardian angel. The way this way written, the way the story unfolded, I didn't expect who was involved and what they did. Courtney does a beautiful job with this book, the flow, the characters, everything. She does a great job of creating a story line and telling the story, while easily communicating the theories mentioned before, and characters that you immediately relate to and suck you in. The characters are incredibly mature for being such a young age.. Okay, well Whitney is incredibly mature. But really, with everything that was thrown at her all at one time, she had to be. Though I'm still quite curious why he (Carter) always looked at her like he hated her. All in all, I really really liked this book.

I give this book 4 hearts
