It amazes me to no end the writing of this author.
Going into this book blind was the best way to experience for me. From the beginning I was mesmerized by Leah's writing style (yet again) the way her words flow so seamlessly together. As the story progressed I was captivated not only by her word choice but the symbolism, the use of color and what they represent, the layers added together to be dissected so perfectly and visually.
In this story Vada the protagonist and her best friend Ellis are in a terrible car accident leaving Vada in a dark place. Her mom comes into town but straight away one can see that Vada is confused about her sexuality. Her mother doesn't make matters easier for her, with the way she talks and treats her. Vada is left with out the support of the one person she needs Ellis, soon she finds herself working as a Cam girl. While I know that this is a very sensitive subject I love reading about present day issues. We get to see and explore the good and bad parts of this world.
What I loved the most about this book is the fact that it deals with real issues. Besides the cam girl there is sexuality. Vada is confused about herself, she knows how society wants her to be, how her mom looks at her. I was touched by this aspect because so many kids go through this issue where they feel that they don't fit a certain mold and why should anyone be made to feel that way? I love that Leah pushes the boundaries and forces readers to confront those issues head on, to really sit back and think before giving into societies wants for how a person should be or act.
Another part of this book that had me captivated was the fact that there is a bit of mystery. There is romance it's just not so plain and/or the main focus which I also love, As we are introduced to one of Vada's clients "Blue" it had me questioning who he is. Why he is so possessive of her. No worries all questions are answered.
Like I said Leah has once again made a novel that had me thinking, dissecting, analyzing and memorized by he beauty of the words and the way she wove this tale together. I love that she always pushes those boundaries exploring new, darker areas of everyday life and putting them in the readers face. I applaud her for showing and telling the world in this riveting, beautiful novel about so many issues that face society currently. It's people like this author that my faith in humanity is restored.
